Project Description

To combat the highest suicide rate in the world, Yimpinnini (or Sistagirls), Indigenous transgender women on Tiwi Islands, have been kickstarting ecological bush tour for community resilience. Bush knowledge is traditionally gendered by male for hunting and female for gathering, but Yimpinnini can do both. Our fluidity tackles the miscommunication in Aboriginal health, low data literacy, segregation of health and environment, low school attendance rate, and community-led data ownership.
Our solution will develop a software for user-centred AI (natural language processing) to translate Tiwi language into English for tourism. As Tiwi communities have one of the highest suicide rate in Australia, especially in transgender population, our translation of Tiwi will compare with LLM mental health language for clinical decision support system. The system is compatible with Acacia, Northern Territory all-in-one public health system for clinicians.
The software is also integrated with the GIS system for ecological mapping, where Yimpinnini can map flora and fauna that are critical to environmental health. Such as mangrove groups that were cleared by colonial missionaries, and telescope snails for monitoring carbon and nitrogen levels in coastal areas, and traditional bush food for Tiwi islanders. Yimpinnini can host workshops in Tiwi middle schools combining computational ecology with traditional bush knowledge, and reflect on their impacts under ESG framework.

Data Story

  1. Tiwi has 22 times higher suicide rate than Australian average
  2. Government has been failing to predict suicide prevention.
  3. Up to 95% communication failure between patients and clinicians even with Aboriginal health worker involved.
  4. Almost 70% data illiteracy rate.
  5. Conventional data collection doesn’t follow Tiwi custom of 8 clans and 4 skin groups.
  6. Non-Indigenous health is segregated from environmental health.
  7. School attendance rate is as low as 60% on Tiwi Islands in 2022.
