Problem Statement
Accessing government services is often confusing and overwhelming, especially during critical life events such as having a child, losing a job, or becoming a carer. Information is fragmented across multiple agencies, filled with complex language, and sometimes fails to reflect the real-world experiences of citizens. Vulnerable groups – including new migrants, people with low digital literacy, and disadvantaged communities are the ones most at risk of being excluded.
Proposed Solution
“GovMate”, an AI-powered life-event navigator mobile app that bridges the gap between official government information and lived community experiences. Through a conversational interface available in multiple languages, GovMate guides users step-by-step through government processes. It integrates verified datasets with user-contributed “experience tips,” helping individuals not only know what the rules are, but also what to expect in practice.
Impact and Vision
By simplifying access, GovMate improves accessibility for all, reduces barriers for vulnerable groups as it allows real-time interactions for personal inquiry, Govhack can also boost trust by combining authoritative sources with relatable community insights. It enables faster and more efficient service navigation, while also fostering social cohesion by encouraging citizens to share their experiences, create a sense of belonging and offer collective support.
Future Implementation Strategy
In the short term, GovMate can be piloted at the council/community level to provide tailored navigation for key life events. In the medium term, integration with MyGov and Service NSW APIs will allow seamless bookings and form submissions. In the long term, GovMate aims to become a national, human-centred AI assistant, ensuring every Australian can confidently access the services they need, when they need them.
