🏘️ AccoMoo – Smarter Housing for Stronger Communities

AccoMoo is a housing and community app that helps residents, councils, and governments understand and respond to housing stress in Victoria.

What AccoMoo Does

  • πŸ“Š Housing Stress Map – Shows suburbs where rent or mortgage costs are highest compared to income.
  • 🏠 Government Housing Offers – Lists public housing, affordable housing projects, and support schemes like rent assistance, bond loans, and first-home buyer grants.
  • βœ… Eligibility Checker – A simple tool where residents enter income, family size, and rent to see which housing supports they may qualify for.
  • πŸ— Planning Insights – Combines housing stress data with building permits and development plans to show future impacts.
  • πŸ‘₯ Community Feedback – Lets residents share views on new developments and rate neighbourhood liveability.

Why It Matters

Housing stress affects thousands of families. By bringing together open data and practical tools, AccoMoo helps:
- Residents find real housing support.

- Planners and councils make better decisions.

- Communities build resilience and fairness.

Data Sources

  • Housing affordability and rental stress data (ABS, Vic Gov)
  • Public housing waitlists and availability
  • Building permits and planning applications
  • Socio-economic and demographic data

✨ AccoMoo = Accommodation + Community – a clear, accessible way to connect people with housing insights and support.

Data Story

πŸ“– Data Story – AccoMoo

The Problem

Across Victoria, thousands of households are in housing stress – spending more than 30% of their income on rent or mortgage repayments.

This pressure leads to financial insecurity, health issues, and weakened community connections.

The Data

We used multiple public datasets from data.vic.gov.au and ABS, including:

- Housing affordability and rental stress by suburb

- Public housing stock and waitlist times

- Building permits and development applications

- Socio-economic and demographic indicators

The Insights

  • Certain suburbs show very high rental stress, where families spend over 40% of their income on housing.
  • Public housing waitlists are longest in the same areas with the highest affordability challenges.
  • Planned developments often do not align with the most stressed communities, risking greater inequality.

The Solution – AccoMoo

AccoMoo combines these datasets into a simple, Dwell-style mobile app that allows:

- πŸ“Š Residents to see housing stress levels in their area

- 🏠 Families to explore government housing offers and check eligibility

- πŸ— Councils and planners to visualise housing demand vs future developments

- πŸ‘₯ Communities to provide feedback on proposed projects

The Impact

By connecting data, services, and community voice, AccoMoo helps to:

- Direct support to the households that need it most

- Guide better housing and infrastructure planning

- Strengthen community resilience and fairness

✨ AccoMoo makes housing data accessible, actionable, and people-focused.

Team DataSets

Victorian Public Transport Lines and Stops

Description of Use Used to assess accessibility of new housing developments to transport, identifying suburbs where congestion risks are highest.

Data Set

Victorian Rental Report

Description of Use Used to calculate housing stress levels by comparing median rent with median income (ABS data). This allowed us to map suburbs where rental stress is highest.

Data Set

Victorian Building Permits

Description of Use We used this dataset to identify areas of upcoming housing development. By overlaying permits with housing stress and school enrolment data, we showed where new builds may increase pressure on community infrastructure.

Enabling Better Community Housing and Infrastructure Planning

How might we use multiple public datasets, including building permits, to guide communities in planning for housing and services in their local communitiesβ€” from understanding areas of housing stress to anticipating the impact of future developments on community access, services, and social connection?
