Enabling Better Community Housing and Infrastructure Planning

Jurisdiction: Victoria

#Building-Victoria's-future

How might we use multiple public datasets, including building permits, to guide communities in planning for housing and services in their local communities— from understanding areas of housing stress to anticipating the impact of future developments on community access, services, and social connection?

Victoria's growing population brings both opportunities and pressures. New housing developments can revitalise neighbourhoods, but they can also overwhelm schools, congest transport networks, and price out long-term residents.
Valuable government data can often sit across different sources: building permits reveal where development is planned, school enrolment data shows capacity pressures, transport usage indicates congestion hotspots, and housing stress indicators highlight affordability crises. When viewed in isolation, each dataset tells only part of the story. Combined, they could help Victorian communities understand the bigger planning and housing picture and respond accordingly.

Residents, community groups, and local councils need better tools to:
- Identify areas currently experiencing housing stress
- Anticipate where new developments might affect community access or infrastructure
- Map gaps between housing pressures and available support services
- Develop tools that help residents plan and maintain strong community connections
The goal is to empower communities to make informed decisions, reduce housing stress, and strengthen social cohesion in their neighbourhoods.

Your task is to create innovative solutions using Victorian government datasets to help communities become active partners in planning their future. Your solution should help neighbourhoods understand, anticipate, and respond to housing and development pressures.

Eligibility: Open to all, but preference given to teams with a lead in VIC. At least one dataset from data.vic.gov.au must be used.

Entry: Challenge entry is available to all teams in Australia.
