Project Description

Description
As stated by the Ministry for the Environment, there is a need to adapt to climate change.

Globally, our goal is to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C or 2°C.
With these changes, global sea levels are expected to increase from 0.44m to 0.83m by 2100.

This means New Zealanders will face 2 core challenges:
(1) slow onset changes such as rising sea levels and

(2) extreme natural events (which will be more frequent and high impact), which will affect people’s homes, livelihoods, and access to coastal areas.
Managed retreat will be important in ensuring people, houses, and culturally significant sites are safe.

We also considered the issues that would concern end users:

For many, buying a house is the biggest commitment they will make. While for others, those planning to construct or build a house will need to plan for the future.
This is approaching 40% of a household's income, which is more than double what it was 20 years ago.

How do we make climate change feel real to people, and help communities manage risks?

Solution
With 'What's Your Ocean Tax?', you will find out the financial impact of sea level rise on your property. Assuming we're on track for the worst-case scenario, this is a big wakeup call for New Zealanders to take action.

Share your profile and see tailored recommendations for you to make a difference!

Your Climate Report is a scorecard that reflects how sea level rises will affect your home or business.

We’ve built this with the community in mind:

(1) For homeowners, aspiring homeowners, investors and landlords

(2) For local businesses

(3) For those managing culturally significant sites and heritage

Future Features
Future builds to facilitate community engagement and planning include:

Integrations with carbon calculation tools: Sign up to and compare against carbon tools

Community Scores and Leaderboards: Compare your individual benchmarks against others

Talk to YourClimateReport: A Gen-AI chatbot to develop tailored recommendations

FutureScore: A feature to determine what the climate impact would be, if you took the next best action

Features:
🔎 Understand the financial impact of sea level rise on your property in one easily understandable metric
🌟 Receive recommendations on addressing your risk levels and climate change
🤝 Share your results with others
🗺️ Plan for the future

Data Story

The Ocean Tax factors in multiple core datasets, putting together data based on sea level risk, projecting and modelling this for the future, and applying this against the value of property in New Zealand:
