Story Points is a proposed gamified street map that will show cultural and heritage locations, as well as parks and recreational facilities.
Phase 1 of development features a simple mobile application showing nearby sites of interest, with the ability to tap through to a description of the site and links to external resources. Foursquare style "check in" allows users to score points. More points can be scored by taking photos while at the site, sharing a digital postcard with contacts, and being with contacts while at the site.
Phase 2 of development adds augmented reality, granting users access to more visual data. For example, to be able to see what a ruin looked like in its glory days, to observe a corroboree or traditional fishing, or arrows on the ground that guide the user to points of interest. And what would a corroboree be without sound?
Phase 3 of development introduces virtual reality, allowing users to visit and experience a site from their own home as a form of "Virtual Tourism". Since not everyone has a VR headset, a computer application would allow users to have a similar experience. Users in VR can talk to each other and to contacts who are physically onsite.
So few of these web sites provide data in a human, let alone computer, consumable way. It's in massive tables that swim before your eyes. Even if I do find a historical site I'm interested in, how do I know if it's in proximity to that walking trail? When I visited Melbourne last year my maps program declared my vicinity to be void of culture - why would I extend my stay? The purpose of this proposal is to show that there are better ways to provide data to people to enable them to make decisions that benefit you, too. Providers need to supply data in machine consumable formats (if you don't want me scraping your website with a bot) to facilitate the provision of this data through applications to consumers.
