Project Description

About Solo Traveller

Solo traveler is an application that helps people discover the heritage of the land in which they walk. Drawing from rich sources of public data such as Trove, PROV and NSW archives, people can uncover new insights of the city they find themselves in. Through our app they can find out information on interesting cultural landmarks or other historic facts about their location.

Features at-a-glance

  • We allow users to search for nearby points of interest, show information about the location, and provide links for people who want to dive a little deeper.
  • Our generative AI voice synthesis integration will happily read out information to you, podcast style. We think you'll be amazed at how realistic and engaging the text-to-speech is.
  • We support map overlays from PROV Map Warper, so for historic events or information we are able to show maps as they were at the time of the event.
  • We draw data from a rich variety of sources, and intend to support crowd-sourcing of information, as well as curated datasets, ensuring a sense of ownership and connection with the app.

Data Story

Sources of data used

We draw data from a number or public archives such as:

  • NSW-State Archives Collection
  • National Library of Australia Trove
  • State Library of Victoria, and
  • Public Records Office of Victoria Collection.

By combining these datasets we are able to showcase a rich multimedia website.

Solo Traveller supports combining text, images, video and location data to give users a high level into the cultural heritage of each location they visit or browse.

By combining data sets we are also remix articles for the PROV by tagging them to cultural stories.
