Project Description

SmartTax is an AI-powered platform designed for the GovHack 2025 "Proactive, Personalised Tax Experience with AI" challenge. Our solution makes tax compliance seamless, accurate, and stress-free for all Australians—regardless of financial literacy. SmartTax leverages advanced data integration, real-time AI insights, and a “Tell Us Once” approach to automate tax compliance. The platform provides proactive guidance, flags potential errors, and offers personalized recommendations—turning tax from a burden into an invisible part of financial wellbeing.

Data Story

Our project uses real Individual Income Tax Return and Superannuation Contribution datasets provided by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for GovHack 2025. We analyzed taxpayer behaviour by income and age group, identifying key trends—such as the 45-54 age group contributing the highest taxable income, and 18–24 the lowest average tax. These insights help power SmartTax’s AI and Smart Coach, enabling context-sensitive deductions, tailored nudges, and accuracy in user guidance. Live data connections with banks, employers, and super funds reduce manual entry and errors, while agency integrations ensure all information is securely shared once—creating a data-driven, frictionless tax experience.
