Project Description

Reducing vehicle idling time is a practical and effective way to reduce emissions, conserve fuel, and improve air quality. A short-term easy solution is to install idling alarms in vehicles, while a long-term solution is replacing ICE vehicles with EVs and Hybrids so that if a vehicle is idling, it is using battery power.

Data Story

Idling of vehicles is a significant contributor to excessive fuel usage and the production of emissions that harm the environment and public health. Enviromental impact of co2 emissions include increasing climate change impacts and worsening air quality. We began by analyzing the Unity water data and working on a map to visualize the excess idling done by their fleet. We then devised solutions and found the best locations for implementation.

Team DataSets

Unitywater Infrastructure GIS Portal

Description of Use We used this dataset to cross-reference ideal implementation vehicles.

Data Set

Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS): Volume 3 - Non ABS Structures, July 2016

Description of Use Used to help plot suburbs on map of idling time.

Data Set

VMS Telemetry Data

Description of Use Used idle duration and from address to create map showing idle time at destination. Also used vehicle name and idle time to find which vehicles idled most and which vehicles were most used in the fleet.

Data Set

VMS Vehicle Data

Description of Use Used to analyze which vehicles should have sensors (short term), and which vehicles should be replaced with EV/Hybrids (long term).

Challenge Entries

Driving a better way forward

Unitywater travels over 3.9 million kilometres each year maintaining water and wastewater services for our region. How might we use our vehicle data to benefit people, planet and productivity in the future? How might we improve our commitment to environmental sustainability, simplified work practices and people safety using vehicle data?

Eligibility: Must use the Unitywater dataset. Must use at least one other dataset. Preference will be given to those providing solutions relevant to the following local Council regions: City of Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast Council, Noosa Council.

Moreton Bay greening as we grow (QLD)

How might we harness the power of the everyday citizen to help protect our diverse flora and fauna as we grow our region; creating a diverse and flourishing planet for generations to come?

Eligibility: Open to everyone, preference will be given to those providing solutions using at least one local Moreton Bay region (City of Moreton Bay and/or Unity Water) data set. Employees of City of Moreton Bay with a direct working relationship with members of the local Moreton Bay Gov Hack node organising committee are ineligible to apply for this prize. If unsure, please feel welcome to check and discuss via Slack channels upon commencement of the event.
