Project Description

Our project, The AI Mental Health Companion, is designed to support international students by providing accessible, multilingual, and culturally sensitive mental health assistance. The platform offers 24/7 digital access, secure and confidential interactions, and pathways to connect with professional healthcare, campus counseling, and peer support. By leveraging artificial intelligence, it addresses critical challenges like academic decline, social isolation, and rising dropout rates caused by unaddressed mental health struggles.

Data Story

Data Story We have reused open datasets including the New Zealand Health Survey, Health and Independence Report 2023, and Published Health New Zealand Data, combining them to highlight the rising prevalence of psychological distress and its effects on students’ wellbeing . These insights underpin our solution’s design, linking mental health data to measurable outcomes such as improved academic performance, reduced absenteeism, and stronger community integration. By reframing national health data through the lens of international student challenges, we demonstrate how AI can transform raw statistics into a proactive, scalable support system that benefits individuals, universities, healthcare providers, and society as a whole.
