Project Overview: Territory Connect
Territory Connect is a user-friendly AR and AI-based virtual guide designed to assist the residents and visitors of the Northern Territory in accessing local services efficiently. The app aims to address the challenges of digital literacy, language barriers, and physical accessibility, providing a streamlined solution that offers real-time information related to healthcare, transportation, housing, social services, and more.
Key Features of the Platform:
AR Integration for Navigation: Users can activate AR mode to receive visual and voice-guided directions to services, making it easy to find clinics, transport stops, or other essential services.
Dynamic Search and Service Categorization: Real-time searching with clear categories allows users to quickly find the services they need, based on location.
Multilingual and Accessibility Support: The app supports multiple languages, including Aboriginal languages, and offers accessibility features such as text-to-speech, voice commands, and customizable UI options for people with disabilities.
Crime Reporting Feature: AR markers enable users to anonymously report crimes, providing real-time location data to law enforcement for quick action.
Kiosk Version: For users without smartphones, public kiosks offer the same functionality, ensuring access to all.
User Scenario:A digitally illiterate Indigenous person, struggling to find healthcare services, can simply use voice commands in their native language to locate the nearest clinic. AR mode then guides them visually or through voice prompts to the destination. This inclusive solution empowers individuals with minimal technical expertise to access essential services easily
We started our project by analyzing data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), which revealed that around 35% of the Northern Territory’s population is digitally illiterate. This statistic highlighted a significant gap in access to essential services, particularly for those unfamiliar with or unable to navigate digital tools. Motivated to bridge this gap, we began brainstorming an innovative solution that would be accessible to both digitally literate and illiterate individuals.
During our ideation process, we recognized the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as these technologies represent the future of digital interaction. AR, with its ability to overlay information on the real world, combined with AI’s capability to personalize and process natural language, seemed like the perfect solution. Thus, the concept of Territory Connect was born – an app designed to provide easy access to healthcare, transportation, and other local services for residents and visitors alike.
We focused on creating an intuitive and inclusive platform, ensuring features like voice commands, text-to-speech, and AR navigation for seamless service discovery. We used Figma to create a prototype of the app, and our research from various journals and articles helped refine AR’s integration for real-world navigation. Ultimately, Territory Connect became an inclusive tool designed to empower all NT residents, regardless of their digital proficiency.
