Project Description

Morethan Steps is a step-tracking app designed specifically for a Local Government Area like Moreton Bay, where every step contributes to greening the community. Users can select weekly step challenges tied to planting local flora. For instance, reaching 50,000 steps in a week results in the council planting a small plant, 90,000 steps will plant a bush, and 120,000 steps earns the planting of a tree. Once planted, users are notified and shown the exact location of the plant, along with information about the species, helping them learn more about their region's biodiversity.

Data Story

Queensland Government data reveals that only 33.8% of Moreton Bay’s original regional vegetation remains, posing a severe threat to local biodiversity due to habitat fragmentation. Additionally, the Australian Bureau of Statistics highlights that 75.2% of adults in the region fail to meet physical activity guidelines. Meanwhile, Sunshine Coast’s successful increase in beach cleanup volunteer participation—by over 18% in the last two years—demonstrates a growing community commitment to environmental action.

Leveraging this trend, the Morethan Steps app offers a unique way for users to contribute to their community's green spaces through their physical activity. By completing step challenges, users help plant native flora in their local area, with each plant linked to their achievements. This approach not only promotes personal fitness but also directly involves users in the greening efforts, providing them with a sense of ownership and connection to the projects they support. This initiative aligns with Moreton Bay's goals of enhancing urban greenery and mitigating environmental impacts, blending community engagement with ecological restoration.

Team DataSets

SCC Open Data Platform

Description of Use The dataset is used to compare and guide the community involvement tactics of the Morethan Steps app. The app can make good step challenges and award systems by looking at trends in charity work and cleanup. This information helps to shape the game-like features of the app, growing on successful community involvement models seen in beach clean-ups on the Sunshine Coast.

Data Set

ABS: National Health Survey

Description of Use The dataset is used to understand the current physical activity patterns and identify target demographics for the Morethan Steps app.

Data Set

Percentage of remnant vegetation by LGA

Description of Use The dataset is used to assess the current state of remnant vegetation in Moreton Bay and other LGAs. For the Morethan Steps app, it helps identify regions with significant vegetation loss and prioritize areas for restoration efforts. This data supports the app’s goal of contributing to ecological balance and increasing green spaces in areas with the most urgent needs.

Data Set

General Guide to the Vegetation Clearing Codes

Description of Use It helps in understanding the legal constraints and requirements for clearing or planting vegetation, ensuring that the app's initiatives align with environmental regulations and promote responsible vegetation management.

Data Set

Native plants of Moreton Bay local government area

Description of Use The dataset is used to identify and prioritize native plant species for conservation and restoration efforts within the Morethan Steps app. It informs the selection of plants for reforestation and greening projects, especially focusing on species that are near-threatened or critically endangered.

Data Set

Moreton Bay Data Hub

Description of Use The Moreton Bay data Hub will help with decisions like greening cities and getting people involved in their communities. The natural planting lists will help choose which species to plant, focusing on the endangered species. With the help of detailed park data, new plants and trees can be strategically placed to improve leisure areas and make them more beautiful and long-lasting.

Data Set

Creation of Urban Heat Islands

Description of Use The dataset will guide the Morethan Steps project in prioritizing tree planting in Moreton Bay area. It identifies zones needing greenery to reduce temperatures, improve air quality, and enhance urban comfort. Users' step milestones will directly lead to tree planting in identified hotspots, linking activity to environmental impact. The data also integrates visuals in the app tp raise awareness about the role of vegetation in cooling urban areas.
