Project Description
iDriveSafe is a smartphone application concept that uses GPS to allow you to safely navigate through Queensland roads. It uses Queensland data sets of motor vehicle accidents and the cause, to generate hazardous locations across the state. The app is designed to safely alert drivers of the hazards in the current area of travel, which changes depending on the location.
The following factors that contribute to road crashes are used as the basis of the app:
Speed
Fatigue
Poor road surfaces
Wildlife
Type of accident (head-on, rear end, tail-gating etc)
Road work locations
Lighting conditions
The app integrates data from above compared to the location to create specific alerts/notifications for specific areas.
Additional features of the app are:
Integrates the speed the car is traveling (with the smartphone) with an alert when the car is exceeding the speed.
Option to add sensors to the front and rear of the car to allow distance notifications for tail-gating,and lighting.
Data Story
The data sets were analysed in MS Excel and QGIS to cross-reference and determine what the main contributing factors are in road accidents.
Factors in road crashes data set
Used to determine what factors contribute to road crashes.
Driver Demographics data set
Used to determine the age ranges that are involved in the highest number of accidents.
Road Crash Locations data set
Used to find most the most common type of accident (rear-end, head-on, etc)
Used spatial data to produce maps
Degraded areas along the State-controlled road network – Queensland data set
Road reserve land degradation spatial data was crossed referenced with crash data to determine if there was a correlation.
