Project Description

DataCompass is an AI-powered search engine for Australian government data.
It allows users to ask natural language questions and instantly discover, link, and explore datasets from sources like the ABS and data.gov.au.
Instead of digging through complex portals, users can build personal dashboards, view dummy charts, and connect directly to the original government datasets in real time.
Data Story
Government data is open, but it is not always easy to find or use.
Students, citizens, researchers and businesses often waste time searching across different portals or struggle to know which dataset is right.
DataCompass makes this easier by combining:
- ABS datasets like demographics, economy and labour force
- data.gov.au open datasets across finance, health, infrastructure and environment
- ATO data about taxation and income distribution (optional)
With DataCompass anyone can ask questions like:
- "What is youth unemployment by state?"
- "What are the trends in housing approvals in Sydney in the past 10 years?"
- "Which industries are growing fastest in my region?"
The system finds the data, shows a simple chart for context, and links the user back to the trusted government source.
It is about making public data accessible and meaningful for everyone.
