Project Description

Data Centre Frontier is a planning platform that turns complex site due diligence into clear, defensible decisions. Users draw a prospective data centre footprint and receive an immediate viability score with full breakdowns across electrical infrastructure, terrestrial and submarine telecoms, environmental hazards, climate, population and land-use zoning, and geological/topographic constraints. Using AI models and auditable datasets, the software also forecasts power and water demand, operating costs, and resilience trade-offs, enabling apples-to-apples comparisons between sites and designs. Every score is explainable: users can inspect inputs, weights and assumptions, export reports, and share evidence with stakeholders. With Data Centre Frontier, governments and organisations can choose locations that are faster to permit, cheaper to run, and better for the grid and the environment.

Data Story

The idea was to merge many different open data sources available, in a comprehensive result result-driven way that could be presented to stakeholders.

Team DataSets

Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2024 — Terrestrial [data set; ArcGIS FeatureServer].

Description of Use Used to calculate to retrieve, and display the protected area in the Data Centre Frontier - TAS (Open Data) prototype. Then used to calculate how much of the polygon is in a protected area and calculate the sub score from that.

Data Set

Bureau of Meteorology. (n.d.). Australia Water Storages — Water Storages Polygon (Layer 1) [data set; ArcGIS MapServer]

Description of Use Used to calculate to retrieve, and display the water storage in the Data Centre Frontier - TAS (Open Data) prototype. Then the data is used as a part of the water subscore calculation.

Data Set

Geoscience Australia. (2024) National Electricity Infrastructure — Transmission Substations (Layer 0) [data set; ArcGIS MapServer]

Description of Use Used to retrieve and show transmission substations in Data Centre Frontier - Tas (Open Data), and once imported, used to then make the calculations from the proposed data centre site to the transmission substation and decide on the grid sub score.

Data Set

Geoscience Australia. (2024). National Electricity Infrastructure — Transmission Lines (Layer 2) [data set; ArcGIS MapServer]

Description of Use Used to retrieve and show transmission lines in Data Centre Frontier - Tas (Open Data), and once imported, used to then make the calculations from the proposed data centre site to the transmission line and decide on one of the grid sub scores.

Data Centres: A Cornerstone of Australia's AI Future

How can we analyse Australia's infrastructure, energy, and geographic data to select locations and operational strategies that will position Australia as the Asia-Pacific's leading AI and cloud computing hub?

#Data-centres-for-2050

Eligibility: Open to all. Teams should use at least one government dataset in their solution, with preference for creative combinations across different data types (infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, geographic, climate, economic, or planning data). Proposals should include clear methodologies for data integration, analysis algorithms, and implementation planning with consideration of real-world deployment challenges
