Project Description

About CrocGurd

Every year, numerous encounters with crocodiles lead to dangerous situations for people living or traveling near crocodile habitats. With rising water levels and changes in temperature, the risks increase. But what if we could predict where crocodiles are most likely to be and alert people before danger strikes?

Our solution is an all-in-one platform that uses modern technology to provide timely and accurate information about crocodile activity.

By analyzing the Northern Territory Crocodile dataset, we’ve integrated the front-end system with popular map services like Google Maps and Waze to create a dynamic alert system based on crocodile risk levels. This system doesn't simply mark the exact spots where crocodiles show up, it keeps track the areas when and where crocodiles pop up the most, using different colors on the map to show how risky each area is—from yellow for caution zone to red for highly dangerous zone. This way, you can quickly spot the danger zones just by glancing at the map.

The platform also encourages users to submit crocodile sightings to keep the data up to date. These reports are immediately reflected on the map, and users nearby receive alert notifications. Whether it’s a recent sighting or important information from the government, users stay informed through the platform.

Beyond alerts, our platform helps raise public awareness about the dangers of crocodiles. We provide visual content and important information on breeding seasons and high-risk behaviors, helping people understand why they need to stay cautious in certain areas.

In the back end, we’ve implemented a powerful machine learning model. By analyzing factors like water levels, temperatures, and historical crocodile spotting data, the system predicts where future crocodile activity is likely to occur. This not only helps us understand their behavior but also allows us to give users more accurate risk warnings.

The platform could integrate more sources of data such as social media posts and photos, the system can verify and analyze these data points through hashtags and images. To improve data accuracy even further, we’re considering additional technologies like night-vision cameras, acoustic sensors, and environmental monitoring devices. These tools will give us even more insights into crocodile activity and help provide real-time monitoring.

By combining technology, data, and education, we’re creating a safer future for communities in crocodile-prone areas. Download the app and stay informed to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Data Story

By leveraging the NT Crocodile datasets, we’ve developed a detailed map that showcases regions with high crocodile capture rates. This map visualises the frequency and distribution of crocodile activities across the Northern Territory. Through analysis of these datasets, we can assess and predict risk levels for both visitors and local residents. This approach not only improves crocodile management practices but also significantly enhances overall safety in the Northern Territory.
